How To Spot Knockoffs When Shopping Online

5 January, 2010

During these economically challenging times, most of us are looking for ways to maximize our dollars. We no longer shop as frequently and have modified our behavior to start shopping during sales and specials. Some have gravitated toward sample sale sites, while others have begun to shop vintage and consignment shops.

Other great sources for savings are auction sites such as eBay, ebid, and bonanzle.  These sites can offer discounts as well as the ability to locate hard-to-find items. But, how do you know that those shoes are genuine Louboutin, or if that Gucci bag is authentic? Here are a few tips to help you buy authentic designer fashions online.

  1. Product – Familiarize yourself with the product. Compare pictures of the item you wish to purchase with pictures on the manufacturer’s website, at authorized retailers, from runway shows, or from red carpet pictures. Triple check the details such as stitching, tags, zippers, and price. Make sure that there are clear photos of the actual item and not just stock photos. Read the description for clarity, correct spelling, and grammar.
  2. Price – Know the original sale price of the goods. If the item retailed for $799, and it’s up for auction at a $49 “Buy It Now” price, then be wary. Always pass if the price seems too good to be true. However, some auctions have low starting prices as a way to entice buyers, again underscoring the need to be familiar with the product. When it comes to price, study all aspects and exercise caution. Also, have an idea of how much you’d feel comfortable paying and stick to that price. Don’t get caught up in the frenzy of bidding.
  3. Feedback – Don’t just glance at the cumulative seller feedback score, check details. Look at what other buyers have said about that seller, and make sure they have a good reputation. Be wary of excessive restocking fees or and mention of wholesale or seconds. You can double check with authentication services such as My Poupette or on collector forums such as the Purse Forum. If you feel secure, then move on to payment.
  4. Payment – Be sure to pay using a trusted third party site, such as Paypal, and use a major credit card if possible. If not, never give your private info directly to the seller, and always pay via a secure site.

If you’re familiar with the product, the price is fair, and the feedback is good – then pay for and enjoy your authentic discounted fashions.

P.S. In both pictures above, the items on the left are knockoffs.
