Celebrating Heroes and Sheroes…Maya’s Way

29 April, 2009

dr-angelou1As DC’s Public Charter Schools face losing more than a quarter of their city funding, it becomes apparent that these institutions need our help more than ever. Even top-performers like Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS) are not immune to the challenges that budget shortfalls could and will create. That is why I hope you’ll join me this Thursday, 30 April, at the historic Lincoln Theatre (1215 U Street, NW) as Dr. Angelou’s See Forever Foundation presents “Celebrating Heroes and Sheroes” and the inaugural Maya Way Awards.

This year, the See Forever Foundation is celebrating men and women who have made extraordinary contributions to the school, as well as those who have gone above and beyond the call to make a positive impact on the well-being of children and communities worldwide. MAPCS has many heroes and sheroes – students, parents, board members, individuals, funders, corporations, community partners, and staff – who work everyday to help at-risk students reach their potential and prepare for college, career, and a lifetime of success. This year’s honorees are:

  • See Forever Foundation / Maya Angelou Public Charter School Founders:

  • Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole: Maya Way in Education

  • Ted Leonsis: Maya Way in Philanthropy
